Rather than doing `allowEmpty` as boolean, have separate types and use
`std::optional`. This makes it harder to forget the possibility of an
empty path.
The `build-hook` setting was categorized as a `PathSetting`, but
actually it was split into arguments. No good! Now, it is
`Setting<Strings>` which actually reflects what it means and how it is
used.
Because of the subtyping, we now also have support for
`Setting<std::optional<String>>` in general. I imagine this can be used
to clean up many more settings also.
* Finish converting existing comments for internal API docs
99% of this was just reformatting existing comments. Only two exceptions:
- Expanded upon `BuildResult::status` compat note
- Split up file-level `symbol-table.hh` doc comments to get
per-definition docs
Also fixed a few whitespace goofs, turning leading tabs to spaces and
removing trailing spaces.
Picking up from #8133
* Fix two things from comments
* Use triple-backtick not indent for `dumpPath`
* Convert GNU-style `\`..'` quotes to markdown style in API docs
This will render correctly.
Continue progress on #5729.
Just as I hoped, this uncovered an issue: the daemon protocol is missing
a way to query build logs. This doesn't effect `unix://`, but does
effect `ssh://`. A FIXME is left for this, so we come back to it later.
Starts progress on #5729.
The idea is that we should not have these default methods throwing
"unimplemented". This is a small step in that direction.
I kept `addTempRoot` because it is a no-op, rather than failure. Also,
as a practical matter, it is called all over the place, while doing
other tasks, so the downcasting would be annoying.
Maybe in the future I could move the "real" `addTempRoot` to `GcStore`,
and the existing usecases use a `tryAddTempRoot` wrapper to downcast or
do nothing, but I wasn't sure whether that was a good idea so with a
bias to less churn I didn't do it yet.
Useful when we're using a daemon with a chroot store, e.g.
$ NIX_DAEMON_SOCKET_PATH=/tmp/chroot/nix/var/nix/daemon-socket/socket nix-daemon --store /tmp/chroot
Then the client can now connect with
$ nix build --store unix:///tmp/chroot/nix/var/nix/daemon-socket/socket?root=/tmp/chroot nixpkgs#hello
We embrace virtual the rest of the way, and get rid of the
`assert(false)` 0-param constructors.
We also list config base classes first, so the constructor order is
always:
1. all the configs
2. all the stores
Each in the same order
